Part of the Gedeo Zone, Yergacheffe is bordered on the south by Kochere, on the west by the Oromia Zone, on the north by Wenago, and on the east by Bule. Gedeo is bordered on the east, south and west by the Oromia Region, and on the north by Sidama. Dila is the administrative center.

This woreda (administrative ward of Ethiopia) covers part of the homeland of the Gedeo people. Coffee is an important cash crop; Esayas Kebede, head of coffee development at the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported over 60,000 hectares are planted with it, and are expected to produce 30,000 tonnes of coffee beans in the 2007/2008 season.

Gedeo is a Zone in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR) of Ethiopia. This Zone is named for the Gedeo people, whose homelands lie in this zone.

The Central Statistical Agency (CSA) reported that 63,562 tons of coffee were produced in Sidama and Gedeo combined in the year ending in 2005, based on inspection records from the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea authority. This represents 63% of the SNNPR's output and 28% of Ethiopia's total output.

Ethiopia was the original source of the coffee bean, and coffee beans are the country's largest export commodity.
