Equipment

To keep your coffee tasting fresh, it is necessary to keep your equipment clean. Old coffee grounds and oils are left behind and residue builds up after each use, creating bitter coffee. Always unplug your equipment when not in use and clean it regularly. Dislodge the grounds from your equipment with a dry paint brush and then wipe with a paper towel or a clean damp cloth. Never use soap. Be sure to carefully dry your grinder so it does not rust. Always take care of your equipment for the best tasting coffee possible.

Grinders & Grinding Coffee

Please refer to “Equipment and Accessories” for grinders that we recommend using at home.

Whole bean coffee stays fresher than coffee which has been previously ground. We recommend grinding only enough coffee for each use. Once coffee is ground it begins to immediately oxidize, deteriorating taste quality.

Purchasing a quality grinder is an essential investment for all coffee drinkers who take their coffee seriously. We recommend using a burr grinder to evenly and consistently grind your coffee beans for optimal taste and freshness. It may take some experimentation to find the best setting for your grinder.

Here are some of the differences between grinders available on the market today:

Blade grinders

Blade grinders are relatively cheap to buy; however, they do not grind your coffee, they merely cut and chop it unevenly and inconsistently. You will likely find mismatched grinds which can range from coarse to dust-like in the same grind. Your quality coffees will never reach its full potential, and you will be left with a brew that is varied and inconsistent.

Burr grinders

Burr grinders are more expensive, but will consistently grind your coffee precisely and accurately, resulting in a better tasting coffee. Burr grinders preserve the delicate natural oils, maximizing both the aroma and flavour. They have two metal burrs or disks placed opposite, and by adjusting the grind you determine the distance between the two rotating burrs, thus determining your grind size.
